Choosing Right Binoculars
Before buying binoculars, you’d better know what you need and ask yourself “Why do I want the binoculars”. Lots of people go to the binoculars stores will not ask this question, but another one: “What are the best binoculars in your store?” This one is hard to answer, since there is no “best binoculars” in the world, but there are binoculars, which just fit your need. If you haven’t determined what use you will have for them, you will likely choose the wrong one. For example, if you want to use the binoculars for night vision, you will not use the same binoculars for bird watching, since the bird watching binoculars are not made for night vision, but for long distance and large magnification.
Knowing what you need in the binoculars is quite important. But you also need to know the meaning of those numbers on the binoculars. You will probably see something like “7x36mm” on the binoculars. The first number refers to the magnification power of the binoculars. In this example, “7” means the image within the lens can be magnified ten times with this pair of binoculars. The second number refers to the diameter of the objective lenses on the binoculars, which, in our example, is 36 millimeters. The size of objective lens determines the amount of light that can enter your binoculars. If your binoculars are going to be used during low light, you’d better choose large objective lenses.
